Overview:
This project is to provide IT support services for a US federal government agency.  Work location in onsite in the Washington, DC area.  This project provides IT support services to support the computer users and general IT operations.  Project IT support services are to manage and maintain the customer network and systems to ensure consistent network connectivity, network security, internet access, manage e-mail services, applications support, information assurance support, operate the Help Desk and provide customer support. The primary goal is to ensure the customer networks and systems deliver a consistently high level of performance, reliability, provide high quality solutions; and provide excellent customer service to resolve issues quickly for all users. You may be asked to work a flexible work schedule on occasion, outside normal business hours of 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, either on-site or through phone, to support scheduled downtime or non-scheduled emergency downtime. You will be part of a team supporting the complete project scope that includes system engineers, network engineers, system administrators, security specialists, and Tier 2 help desk specialists.  The computer platforms supported include Windows, Linux, and Unix.

Responsibilities:
This is a hands-on Technical Writer position for a team of Systems Administrators, Systems Engineers, Network Engineers, Security Specialists, and Help Desk staff.   The overall project IT support services is to manage and maintain the network and systems to ensure consistent network connectivity, network security, internet access, manage e-mail services, applications support, information assurance support, operate the Help Desk and provide customer support.  The networks and systems will deliver a consistently high level of performance, and reliability.  The primary responsibilities will include:
  • Meeting with authors and team representatives to review documents, compile inputs/corrections, resolve issues, and provide final document for official publication.
  • Produce original content by becoming familiar with the subject, interviewing subject matter experts and other research as needed.
  • Review, write, edit, and update various technical documents and white papers.
  • Coordinate the gathering of source material for technical documents and aggregate material into a single cohesive and concise document.
  • Produce Installation Guides, Help Files, User Guides, Production Operation Manual and additional documents as needed.
  • Document all processes and procedures for capturing and reporting the status of proposed changes to the supported systems, components, databases, applications and products.
  • Document the system within a Configuration Management Plan (CMP).
  • Document all hardware and software components within the network.
  • Ensure all new and existing IT devices are entered into the Enterprise Portfolio Management system.
  • Provide documentation for the continuity of operations for all of its contractual responsibilities, within a Continuity of Operations (COOP) plan, to include any changes to the network or system components prior to implementation.
  • Assist the user with documenting desktop configuration changes.
 Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology or other related technical discipline AND 10 years of experience with software related projects; 8 years of additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree; AND the following certification:
    • Security+ Certification.
  • 10 yrs. of experience as a Technical Writer for software related projects and hardware components within the network.
  • 6 yrs. of experience having to edit grammatical, formatting and logic errors in narrative and graphic products as well as ability to identify logical inconsistencies that will require the Author's attention. 
  • 6 yrs. of experience editing highly technical documents involving IT software and hardware systems and networks.
  • Must be able to explain highly technical and scientific ideas in simplistic terms for the average reader to understand.
  • Experience working within a primary Data Center environment.
  • Excellent customer-focused problem resolution skills.
  • Experience to edit narrative and graphic products to identify and correct typographical and grammatical errors and to identify logical inconsistencies that will require author attention.
  • Must have experience in gathering required data and inputs to create written narrative and graphic documents of a technical and business nature, ensuring grammatical, format, style, and logic while using a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and scheduling tools. 
  • Extensive experience with advanced functionality in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio.
  • Exceptional verbal and written English communication skills.
Desired/Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • DoD experience, preferable Army customer experience.
  • Write and edit technical documents, including business proposals, reports, user manuals, briefings and presentations, functional descriptions, system specifications, guidelines, special reports, and other project deliverables to meet contract requirements.
  • Develop outlines and drafts for review and approval by technical specialists and project management ensuring that final documents meet applicable contract requirements and regulations.
  • Research and gather technical and background information for inclusion in project documentation and deliverables.
  • Consult relevant information sources, including library resources, technical and financial documents, and client and project personnel, to obtain background information, and verify pertinent guidelines and regulations governing project deliverables.
